[It all went down pretty fast. A new alien threat to the universe popped up - standard stuff, mostly, world domination, etc etc, your heroes will never defeat me, yadda yadda, but then the League got new intel. It was all hands on deck at the time, or they probably would have elected to keep that certain intel from The Flash.
The guy had managed to build a replica of the Anti-Monitor's machine, that would destroy the universe if it wasn't destroyed first. The same machine that he had died to stop the first time around, when the Anti-Monitor attacked. Barry had panicked internally; just the mention of it had brought up horrible memories - being held hostage for weeks, being tortured by the Psycho-Pirate, finally having to give up his life to run fast enough to stop the hideous machine.
The only thought that crystallized, through millions of thoughts flitting at light-speed through his mind, is that it cannot be allowed to happen. Barry stopped it once. He can do it again. That's the reason he left, a red blur, there and gone, too fast for even Superman to catch up to him.
Wally had cursed up a storm when he realized. (So had Hal, probably.) Then it was a race against time, not only to stop the machine before it could gather enough power to wipe out the universe, but to stop Barry before he could stop it himself. On a Javelin, headed toward the remote location they finally tracked it down to, he points to the top of a high mountain, ominous structures grown out of it. They're too high up to see Barry, but he must be down there.]
[When the Anti-Monitor intel had come in, there had been much cursing. Especially once Barry had taken off by himself. Hal knows the speedster well enough by now to know exactly what he's thinking and it's not good. Everything from there had been a panicked rush, trying to get there soon enough to both stop this idiot with his copycat tech and also stop Barry. When they reach the mountain, Hal is more than ready to get in there and keep this from ending the way it did the last time]
Great. Good for us. Have Bats and the science nerd told us their brilliant plan yet? Because I'm leaning towards just going in there and hitting things. Barry's stupid ass included.
[Wally is a jittery mess at the flight controls; it's a miracle he's keeping a smooth, even altitude right now. The last time this happened, he lost his uncle - it's understandable that he's anxious and distressed. Hal, on the other hand, seems to have reacted with nothing but anger. Understandable also. The last time this happened, he lost his best friend.]
Not yet. They say they're working on it still. We've got maybe seven minutes before it builds up enough power to activate.
[It's visible down there, a steady pulse of hellish orange light and the dull roar of machinery audible even over the jet.]
Seven minutes is more than enough time for this all to go to shit. [It's more than enough time for Barry to wipe himself out again, too. Hal's anger is really just a mask to hide how afraid he is. The last time this happened, he lost Barry and everything went downhill from there. He can't do that again]
Fuck it, I'm going down there. [He doesn't know what else to do. He feels like if he doesn't take a hands on approach here, he's gonna lose it]
[Wally is a little white in the face to think about it. Hal is right - 7 minutes is long enough for anything to go wrong. He doesn't even argue at this point. There's not going to be any telling Hal not to go down there and he wouldn't even if he thought he might convince him. They're both invested in keeping Barry from doing something monumentally stupid. His hands fly over the controls to set the jet to hover.]
Keep your comm on. I'll patch you in when the brain trust figure out how to dismantle that thing.
[So it'll be fine. He'll have backup. And hopefully, Superman's not dumb enough to try and stop him because they all know how it usually ends when he does that]
Will do. Tell Bats to hurry it the hell up. [He jumps out of the Javelin without another word, speeding off through the air towards the hellscape of machinery. It feels like there's a countdown looming over all of them. Hopefully they're not already too late to keep Barry from being stupid]
[It's a hideous mess of gears and metal, seemingly growing, jagged and sharp out of the top of the mountain like something straight out of Apokalips. Sure enough, Superman is hovering down there, worried, which only grows worse when he spots Hal come to take matters into his own hands.]
Lantern. I can't find Flash. The composition of this metal has enough lead in it that I can't see through.
[Several months ago, the universe had dropped a baby on Hal and Barry. Or, really, it had dropped one on Barry, given that she's biologically his. But at this point their lives are so wrapped up that Hal had to deal with the consequences too. The first couple weeks with the baby had been rough but at this point they've figured it out and transitioned pretty well from it just being the two of them to being parents.
Today is an entirely new challenge, though. Today's the final night of Hanukkah and they're going to Jim's place in Coast City to celebrate with Hal's family. Hal's family, who have yet to actually meet Dawn. Hal is not looking forward to it. Jim had been confused but supportive months ago when Hal told him about the baby. Jack, however...Hal can't remember the last time Jack wasn't a dick about everything]
We could just blow this off. [As they approach Jim's house, Hal more and more regrets saying that they would be here. Of course, that would mean Jack and Jim won't finally get to meet their new niece and maybe that's unfair] That'll really give Jack something to complain about. He'll have fun with it.
[Hal's family have yet to meet Dawn and that needs to change. She's as much Hal's as she is Barry's, so it doesn't seem fair that all of Barry's family have met her. Going to celebrate Hanukkah with Hal's brothers seemed like a no-brainer; they go most years anyway, ever since Hal and Barry started more openly seeing each other way back when. Barry is carrying Dawn, dressed for the occasion in a new blue satiny dress, with a silver bow headband around her head. (She's got a similar green and white ensemble in the closet at home for Christmas with the Garricks, coming up.) Hal was relegated to diaper bag duty. Traveling with an infant is not the most fun in the world.
Which is why when Hal says they can blow it off, he shoots him a look.] No way. We came all the way here and she hasn't even had a meltdown yet, so we're doing this.
[Hal makes a face right back at Barry. Mostly he just doesn't want to answer questions or deal with lectures from Jack. That second one isn't new. He's never really wanted to deal with lectures from Jack. But now they're gonna be lectures about a baby and that just seems so much worse]
Fine. I'm shifting the blame for whatever happens in there to you, then. [The state of his relationship with his brothers really has become sad since their mother died. They make it to Jim's front door and Hal turns to Barry] If Jack's here already, get ready to get mobbed by all five kids.
Nope. If we had visited earlier, you could have gotten this over with. It's on you that we're only making it out now. [He bounces Dawn lightly in his arms when they make it to the front door, content to wait on Hal to knock. It's his family, he needs to initiate this.]
I think I can handle your nieces and nephews. We gonna let them know we're here?
Love you too. [He smiles down at Dawn, making curious baby noises and gripping onto Barry's shirt.] Isn't that right? We love your daddy.
[Unfortunately for Hal, Jack is the one who answers the door, a few of the kids peering around him to see who it is. He seems a little... stumped.] Well. You actually made it.
[Barry extracts himself from Hal's octopus grip sometime around mid-morning. He'd woken up briefly, a few hours ago, to call in sick to work (reminding himself that it's probably good for his secret identity anyway, regular people do get sick on occasion), but he hadn't had to leave the bed for that. By mid-morning, though, Barry can't really sleep in any longer. He's happy to leave Hal sleeping for as long as he needs to, but after pressing a soft kiss to Hal's temple, he gets out of bed to take a quick shower and pull on a pair of lounge pants and one of Hal's t-shirts, and then heads downstairs to start making breakfast. Namely because he's hungry, but also because he thinks Hal will probably be hungry too.
They burned a lot of calories last night.
So that's probably how he'll wake up, with Barry missing from the bed but the warm and comforting smells of waffles and bacon and eggs drifting through the house to let him know he hasn't gone far.]
[When Barry gets up, Hal doesn't really notice. He's a heavy sleeper when he's tired. He just sort of shifts to take over Barry's spot on the bed, stealing his pillow in the process too. Around the time Barry starts making breakfast he wakes up, briefly confused by why the hell it smells like waffles in the room. Then he realizes it's not in the room at all and Barry's probably downstairs making breakfast. He gets up to shower, tugging on a pair of comfortable pants and grabbing a shirt but not putting it on just yet. He heads downstairs and into the kitchen where Barry is]
Look at what you did. What are you, fifteen? [There are...quite a few bite marks on Hal's upper body. They absolutely got carried away last night. He's definitely not mad about it, he just thinks it's funny]
[Barry turns to watch him, just flipping the waffle iron, stifling a fond smile at the sight of all the love bites scattered over Hal's neck, and shoulders, and chest. Maybe he did go a little crazy last night.] You did worse to me, it's just all gone away. [Barry doesn't have to wear teeth marks like trophies all day. Sometimes he's a little sad about that. Mostly he's glad he doesn't have to be embarrassed.]
Doesn't count. They go away in like an hour on you. I'm gonna be stuck with these for at least a couple days. [Being embarrassed is not a problem. Hal was born without the ability to feel shame. He tugs his shirt on and moves across the kitchen to Barry, leaning in for a kiss]
You did start it. [Barry refuses to be ashamed of what he did. He kind of likes the constellation of bites littering Hal's skin right now. He flips another waffle out onto the platter as Hal comes in for a kiss, returning it briefly.]
Mm. Go ahead and start making yourself a plate, I'm just finishing up the waffles.
I did. And I have no regrets despite being covered in bite marks like some kind of animal attacked me.
[Hal pulls away from the kiss, giving Barry's ass a light smack before he heads over to grab a plate out of the cabinet] The waffles smell really good.
[It had been days longer than Hal said he'd be gone. Barry was good, for a while, not freaking out and not doing more than spamming the other Lanterns' communicators with requests for updates whenever one of them was in range of Earth. (That's being good, considering how worried he's getting.) He hasn't heard from Hal at all - and turns out, neither had the guys. Until one of them managed to track down where he'd gone - or more accurately, where he'd been taken. The general vicinity, anyway.
Turns out Sinestro is still pretty obsessed with Hal. And he's still kicking around. Barry's best friend has been kidnapped by an evil mustache-twirling space alien.
"Let us handle it," John had said, but Barry? He's not so good at sitting back and letting people handle things. Especially where Hal is involved. Batman's going to kill him when he gets back, but hotwiring a javelin and setting off into deep space, locked onto the rough coordinates he managed to discern from conversation with John, is pretty satisfying. He's just so tired of always being useless whenever Hal runs into trouble out there. For once, he wants to be the one to bring his friend home instead of waiting, biting his nails to stubs and pacing holes in the monitor room floor like some kind of Army wife.
He's outfitted in a slim, space-ready version of his suit from the Watchtower storage, and drawing closer to the planet they suspect Sinestro has commandeered, that they guess he's holding Hal on. Whatever happens, and it's probably going to go badly, Barry doesn't think he'll regret it. At least he's doing something.]
[Sinestro being obsessed with Hal is an understatement. He'll basically never rest until he either kills Hal or sways him over to the Sinestro Corps. Whichever comes first. This time, Sinestro's Corps have commandeered a small planet and have staged a violent takeover of their government. Turns out, this was all to capture the attention of the Green Lantern Corps. Sinestro had been hoping it would be Hal that showed up but he was honestly fine with whichever Lantern they sent. It just made his day when it was Hal.
Unfortunately, Sinestro had been prepared with traps set the minute you broke the atmosphere on the planet. Traps that are still set and fully capable of taking down a Javelin. Rushing the planet is a terrible idea and if Barry had let the Lanterns handle it like John said to, they would have known this. But that's not what happened, of course. The planent is full of yellow energy now and there are Yellow Lanterns just waiting to grab anyone caught in the planet's new security system so they can be taken to Sinestro. Who has, by the way, taken over the planet's former ruling family's palace and erected a statue of himself outside. What a douche]
[Yeah, he starts to realize he maybe should have listened to John the moment the javelin goes down in a burst of yellow light. Despite being in stealth mode. How were they prepared for that? This is supposed to be the highest in high tech space travel Earth has to offer!
Barry tries bailing out in the escape pod, also in stealth mode, first - while the yellow lanterns are busy hauling in the javelin, and hopefully distracted. He just has to get planetside, and then he can run again, and find Hal. That's the plan. But he's a superhero, and nothing ever really goes according to plan. The stealth cloaking fails once the pod hits a certain altitude, affected by the crackling yellow energy that surrounds the planet, and a crash landing to the planet's surface is inevitable.
Luckily he's a speedster, or he might not walk away from this; he's still pretty banged up when he first emerges from the wreckage, and a little disoriented with a concussion that will fade in half an hour or so. Just disoriented enough that his attempt to flee the yellow lanterns that swarm the crash site fails miserably.
Looks like he's getting dragged, struggling, into that gaudy palace by yellow lantern guards, who are crowing about their find. Another human, look! It must have come after the Earth Lantern!]
[Sinestro is in the main hall of the palace, Hal tied up in glowing yellow chains in front of him. His ring is sealed in a yellow bubble floating next to Sinestro's head. The most annoying part about Sinestro, besides everything else about him as a person, is the fact that he knows how the green ring works. Sinestro turns when his Lanterns enter the palace, looking obnoxiously smug]
Well, Jordan, it appears we have company.
Yeah? Good. Someone else for you to tell your entire evil plan to.
[When the yellow lanterns haul Barry in front of Sinestro, he raises an eyebrow. Apparently, he'd been expecting another Lantern]
This is a surprise. Not another one of your Green brothers, as I'd expected. An Earth hero? Was he the only one? They tend to travel in groups.
[As the yellow lanterns assure Sinestro Barry was alone, Hal looks up to, making a noise of annoyance when he sees who it is]
[Wow. This is so gaudy. Barry barely has time to appreciate the hideous, eye-searing yellow decor in what seems to be a throne room before he spots Hal, bound up in glowing chains, distinctly without his ring. Hell.
The yellow lanterns drag Barry in front of the 'throne', shoving him down to his knees on the ground, keeping him bound in similar yellow chains. He hasn't tried to vibrate out of them yet - he's saving that little trick for later. One of them slugs him when he jerks against his bindings, and he scowls up at Sinestro through a bloody lip.] Do you really think I'm the only one? Or just the only one your guys could catch? [He's bluffing. 100%. Though it's probably only a matter of time before someone tracks one of them down; the tracker in Barry's suit should still be active, unless the yellow energy fried it too.
Lowering his gaze to Hal, he resists the urge to roll his eyes.] I'm not sure how you can't believe it. You've been missing for a week and a half. [And Barry is famously dumb when it comes to Hal.]
[Sinestro sighs, bored. To say he's disappointed by the lack of a Green Lantern rescue party is an understatement. Apparently, he's not taking Barry seriously]
A bluff. And a poor one. Do the Guardians really care about you so little that they didn't even send someone qualified to rescue you, Jordan?
Yeah, I'm almost as disappointing to them as you, Sinestro. [He scowls at Barry, lowering his voice] So you rushed Sinestro Land? Alone? What kind of dumbass plan is that?
[This is about when Sinestro grabs a handful of Hal's hair, yanking his head back]

why going to rescue your boyfriend in space is a bad idea

[This is about when Sinestro grabs a handful of Hal's hair, yanking his head back]
I do apologize, am I interrupting the reunion?
